Being Thankful

It seems like 2020 has brought nothing but uncertainty and worry to our lives. With COVID19 rates climbing again and virtual learning schedules changing, many of us are wondering what the upcoming winter months will look like. Even during the beginning rush of the holiday season, November is usually a time when we sit back and think about what we are thankful for. But during the last 9 months, it has become a habit for most of us to dwell on the negative, and while it’s understandable since life been quite difficult for everyone, there is always something positive to look for out there.

Rage Against Addiction has two women’s sober living houses in rural Harford County, MD. Both houses were established under the Daughter’s House program, which strives to “provide more quality options to individuals in transition between rehab and recovery.” The first house opened in November 2018 and is named after the successful Daughter’s House program. Sister House opened in May 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic. Both houses fill a never-ending need for those struggling in our community and offer an encouraging environment for women to recover from addiction, become independent, and begin to heal the broken parts of their lives. Since November 2018, Rage Against Addiction has helped 52 residents in both houses ranging from eighteen years old to the mid-fifties. Once accepted into one of the houses, there is a thirty-day blackout period where residents cannot go out except to actively look for employment and attend NA/AA meeting where they must find a sponsor. Cell phones and vehicles are not permitted to those who are unemployed, and residents must be up by 7:00am during the week. This is a critical time at the very beginning stages of recovery; the intention is for the women to solely work on their own lives without the distractions from the outside world, but they are often coming directly from a rehabilitation facility, are recently released from incarceration, or are literally coming in off the streets, and likely have little confidence and coping skills to manage life outside of addiction. During their stay at Daughter’s House or Sister House, residents must participate in housework and monthly activities, such as counseled discussions, yoga/relaxation classes, paint nights, family dinners, and Narcan training. After their stay at one of the houses, Rachel Bongiorno, the Program Director, assists the women with an individual plan of long-term recovery so that they may continue on a happier and healthier path.

Since March, when COVID19 began impacting Maryland, many businesses shut down and events were postponed. Our annual Memory Walk / Recovery Run on April 4th was cancelled, and though we hoped to eventually reschedule it for the summer, we held our first Virtual Memory Walk / Recovery Run on April 4th instead. Our generous followers walked, ran, or did in-home exercise in honor of those in recovery, to support those struggling with addiction, and to remember those we lost along the way. They posted pictures and videos on our Facebook page, brought in donations, and helped us spread awareness about addiction in and around our community. Proceeds from that event benefited our Daughter’s House program as well as the following programs:

  • Rage Club – designed for children eight to fifteen years who have been shaken by addiction, and provides counseled discussions and rewarding activities to help children positively cope with the effects of addiction.

  • RAA ABC (After Baby Care) – provides post-partum care packages for new mothers in recovery.

  • Sober Living Funding Initiative – assists with rent for those in early recovery.

We will finish off the year with a Rage Club Holiday get-together and our annual gift-giving to several local children who have lost a parent to addiction, who have a parent in an addiction treatment center, or who have a parent in early recovery. We know the next couple of months can be difficult and we hope to brighten up the holidays for those in our community who need it the most.

As the year winds down, we want to thank you for sticking with us through these trying times. We know it hasn’t been easy for anyone, but we are so very grateful for our thoughtful followers and those who have selflessly donated to help keep our programs running. We truly could not do this without all of you and we hope that 2021 will be filled with more positivity.

In Memory Of

Audrey Marie (Naunton) Belcher

12/30/1982 - 2/26/20

Daughter, Sister, Mother, Wife, Friend

Audrey battled addiction for about twenty years. She led a life with many ups and downs but there were beautiful moments speckled in between. She is missed by all who truly knew her.

Audrey loved to write poetry and journaled everything in high school. I have many of these writings now in my possession. She also loved to paint and doodle pictures all over anything and everything (even on her bedroom wall growing up, much to my parents' dismay!) She also wrote down many, if not all, of her prayers. She often prayed for sobriety, and for her family and friends to be proud of her: “Build me back up. Show me how to provide and

care for my children and guide me to make my family and friends proud. Show me the way to make you proud. Please bless and protect my children, family, and friends, loved ones, and enemies. As always, my life is in your capable hands.” Audrey and I have suffered a lot of loss together. We lost our mother in 2003 and our father in 2014. Audrey sang “Landslide” at both of my parents’ funerals. It was beautiful. She had four beautiful children - Logan, Chase, Josslyn, and Lorna - and she loved them the best she could. She enjoyed swimming with them and camping out in the back yard. They loved making strawberry pancakes on special mornings. She loved her niece and nephew, and loved spending Christmas time over at our house with all of our cousins together. Most recently, Audrey lived in Churchville with her four children and her husband Aaron. Every time mom, dad, Audrey or I ever hung up the phone or left each other, we always said “I love you, be careful, God protect you through the night.” This was true the evening before God called Audrey home as well; we said those exact words.

I find comfort in picturing her in the arms of my parents once again and I know that her soul is finally at peace. She was battling her disease internally every day. She fought for as long as she could. She truly didn’t want that life, but she had an illness she couldn’t overcome. I’m currently raising her 1-year-old daughter and I am trying to make sure she remembers her mother and the goodness in her heart.
